I don't want to see Depp as a pirate anymore, as once was enough. No super heroes in iron, latex, or over done abs. My idea of a hero is Hawkeye from The Last of the Mohicans or Maximus from Gladiator or Sigourney Weaver in Aliens.I've seen one film at a theater this year but lots of films via Netflix.I especially liked Exit Through the Gift Shop and The Fighter, Bale was excellent. These days I rarely take film critics seriously as their taste is pretty dubious and they often grade films based on their own agendas potical or whatever.I suspect that films will go on this way for awhile longer and then maybe the whole enterprise will be insupportable.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24904037.post-34976348739997965642011-08-01T20:53:19.951-03:002011-08-01T20:53:19.951-03:00Furious,
I wanted to ask you a question regarding...Furious,

I wanted to ask you a question regarding an earlier post about the next Star Trek movie. The post seemed to revolve around the question of who the villain should be. I thought Star Trek was supposed to be science fiction. Isn't sci-fi supposed to be about new ideas and the effects of new technology and new races on human beings? Positive examples would be Blade Runner, 2001, the Quiet Earth, or Phase IV.

Making the movie a question of who Kirk will be punching out (followed by the inevitable climactic explosion) diminishes Trek from Sci-fi to mere space adventure.

Here's a thought, in the classic series, who was the villain in these stories?

The Enemy Within
Metamorphosis
The Cloudminders
Devil in the Dark

There's no clear-cut, black hat villain who needs to be defeated in these stories.

In The Enemy Within, "evil" Kirk isn't the villain because he's part of Kirk. The problem is reintegrating the two Kirks in time to rescue the landing party.

In Metamorphosis, the Companion isn't evil. It's actually benign. It rescued, sustains, and protects Cochran. The problem is communicating with it and working out a compromise.

In the Cloudminders, it isn't evil villains who need to be overcome as much as the reluctance of two hostile groups to talk to each other rather than fight.

Devil in the Dark is about Kirk and Spock overcoming their preconceptions about an alien based on the alien's physical appearance.

I think Star Trek should be about more than just a simplistic good vs. evil fight.

I'd like your thoughts on this D.Robert the Wisenoreply@blogger.com
