Hollywood Babble On & on #350: Do The MGM Shuffle

Welcome to the show folks...

The borderline moribund studio MGM has announced a major shake-up of its management. CEO Harry Sloan has been promoted out of the CEO position, though he will remain as the company's Chairman of the Bored Board. In his place will be worldwide movie chief Mary Parent, CFO Bedi Singh, and vice-chairman/ "restructuring expert" Stephen F. Cooper to hopefully bring the studio's finances into some sort of coherent shape.

And damn, do they need those finances reshaped. The company's $3.7 billion debt has hampered it from making a dent in the movie market despite its massive library and the revenue it brings in, it's just barely able to keep creditors paid off and the company afloat. And while their upcoming movie slate has some promise, I fear their performance may be hurt by the sheer dead weight of the MGM brand.

I would like to see MGM rebound, because I think a healthy, competitive film business is vital to our cultural survival, so I'm going to wishing them luck on this potentially impossible task.

  1. Completely off topic but I have a question for anyone who can answer it.

Can anyone identify what that thing Spock is holding the the banner picture is? I know it's one of those mechanical computation devices so popular before the advent of micro electronics but I can't figure out what it's purpose was. They tended to be pretty specialized...

It's driving me buggy because I know I my dad had one just like it when I was a kid and I can't remember what it did.

  2. I think it's a variation of the slide-rule, possibly with a few "23rd Century" modifications by the prop-department.

  3. Oh, it's definately a variation of the slide rule but I don't think there have been any mods done to it. As I said, my dad had one that looked pretty much identical to that one. I think it has something to do with aviation, possibly fuel calculations or something to do with navigation, but I can't for the life of me remember exactly what dads did. (Bear in mind I was about six when I last saw the thing and I'll be turning 46 next week so my memories are going to be a wee bit hazy.)

Do you happen to know which episode that still came from?
